What makes this conference unique?
This conference immerses you in a world-class coastal environment where you will learn and photograph alongside the pros. The format is organized for you to learn different techniques, try them in the field and get feedback on your work each day, from creating dramatic compositions to refining your camera settings, defining your photographic style and much more. You will have the opportunity to learn hands-on, in the field with almost every one of our instructors.
While on the Oregon Coast, your time will be spent in hands-on, small group field excursions, image reviews and post-processing sessions. To make the most of your time, presentations will be provided on equipment, locations and shooting techniques in advance for you to prepare for the event.

- Camera settings for coastal landscape photography, including exposure bracketing, focus stacking, long exposure wave motion and wide-angle lens composition
- Use of various focal length lenses to capture different effects including telephoto forest composition
- Effective use of polarizers and neutral density filters
- Strategies to capture tack sharp images every time
- Finding your composition, from grand landscapes to small scenes
- Post-processing techniques in Lightroom and Photoshop, including luminosity masks, smart object techniques, exposure blending, focus blending.
- Finding inspiration in abstracts and small scenes
- Slowing down and going beyond the iconic shot
- Refining vision and style in your photographs

Itinerary
Keep yourself immersed in photography from sunrise to sunset. Each day will be an adventure as you go in the field to explore, learn and photograph the Oregon Coast with a new instructor. Return together and review what you learned, followed up with image reviews, post-processing sessions and more. A range of field sessions will be available based on physical ability. Everything is within an hour’s drive from the conference venue.

Location and Accommodation
Newport, Oregon
Situated along miles of epic coastline, the conference venue is at the Hallmark Resort in Newport, Oregon. As a perfect basecamp for photographers, every room has a view of the Pacific Ocean. Daily, in-the-field excursions will take place along the Oregon Coast, all within an hour's drive. Conference presentations and classes will take place at the Hallmark Resort. All meals are catered by the award-winning Georgie’s Beachside Grill.
We have a block of rooms for attendees at the conference center, the Hallmark Resort, and the Whaler down the street. Once you register, we will send information on how you can book your accommodation.

Conference Price
$2400
Reserve with a deposit of $1000. The remaining balance is due 90 days before the event on Monday, July 11, 2022. The event is limited to 100 attendees.

Key Details
Itinerary
Out of Oregon takes place Oct 9-13, 2022. It begins on October 9th around 5:00 pm with a welcome reception, dinner and opening keynote. We will end on October 13th at 11:00 am. A more detailed itinerary will be shared with you as we get closer to the event.
Transportation
You are responsible for your transportation. Newport, Oregon is an easy 2.5 hour drive from Portland, Oregon. During the event, excursion groups will carpool together with other attendees to the shooting locations, or you can drive on your own.
Accommodation
We recommend everyone stay at the Hallmark Resort since this is the conference venue. Part of the fun staying in one place is hanging out with photographer friends and instructors, eating breakfast and sharing the elevator together as you start and end each day. We have a block of rooms reserved for attendees at the conference center, the Hallmark Resort and at the Whaler down the street. Registration information will be sent when you sign up for the conference.

Your second payment is due 90 days before the event.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I book my accommodations?
We recommend everyone stay at the Hallmark Resort since this is the conference venue. Part of the fun staying in one place is hanging out with photographer friends and instructors, eating breakfast and sharing the elevator together as you start and end each day.
We have a block of rooms reserved for attendees at the conference center, the Hallmark Resort with rates from $119-$214 per night. We also have a block of rooms available at the Whaler down the street with rates from $109-$119 per night.
Registration information will be sent when you sign up for the conference.
What to expect after you register?
After registering, you will get an email with details about the conference including key dates, hotel information and more. Be sure to stay connected via email to receive crucial event communication including surveys about your preferences and updates as needed.
How am I assigned to my field sessions?
What fitness level is required for the excursions?
Some of the excursions will have almost no walk and where you can get out of the car and start shooting. Other excursions require a hike with variable terrain including sand dunes and rocky, uneven terrain.
We will split the group to accommodate all hiking abilities when necessary. Comfortable hiking shoes/boots are recommended.
What is the weather on the Oregon Coast in October?
October is fall in Newport and can be mild and wet. Daytime temperatures average around 60° and nighttime can be around 45°F.
What if it rains?
Be sure to bring appropriate weather gear. Remember that bad weather often makes the best images. Schedules will be re-arranged as needed to accommodate weather conditions.
Who is this event for?
What photography equipment do I need?
You’ll want a DSLR or mirrorless camera and a tripod. We’ll share detailed equipment recommendations before the event. A laptop is suggested so you can work on your images during the post-processing and critique sessions.
Will there be a chance to hang out with the instructors?
Will I be sitting in classes all day?
Can I bring a non-photographer friend or family member with me?
Of course! They are welcome to join us for the group presentations at no charge. The in-the-field teaching excursions are limited to ten people and are reserved for conference attendees only. A meal pass will be offered at an additional charge so that they can join us for group meals.
How do I confirm I am registered for an event?
You can view all of the events you’re registered for by logging into your Out of Chicago account. In the upper right corner of the website, go to “my account” and “my conferences”. You should see your conference listed there. If it is not, please email us at support@outofchicago.com.

What are your Covid-19 policies for in-person events?
With the evolving recovery of the pandemic, we continue to observe recommendations by the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and local guidelines for events. This includes physical distancing, masking, health screening and sanitation protocols.
We may require proof of vaccination to attend the event, as we have for our previous events. This will be determined once we get closer to the event.

- You have had close contact with a person who has symptoms of COVID-19 within the past 14 days.
