 In Conferences

This past weekend, we announced the winners of the first-ever Out of Chicago Print Competition. Photos were broken up into four categories — illustrative, wedding, photojournalism and portrait — and were judged using the “12 Elements of a Merit Image.”

Out of all the photos entered, a Best of Show award was also presented. Below are our four winners; click on each image to see them larger.

Best Photojournalism: “The Reptile” by Russ Heritage

Best Wedding: “Peek A Boo” by Diego Ivan Martirena

Best Portrait: “The English Press” by Diego Ivan Martirena

Best Illustrative: “Mouse Trap” by Kevin Bailey

Our Best of Show award went to “Mouse Trap,” by Kevin Bailey. Congratulations to our winners!

We had nearly 100 entries in this year’s competition, with several entries receiving a Merit score of 80 or above. Stay tuned for more competitions like this coming in the future!

This was the first print competition that I had ever entered and while it was a bit humbling at times, I can’t wait for the next one! I strongly recommend that everyone seriously consider entering a competition like this at least once. It is a valuable learning experience and will definitely make you a better photographer. My only suggestion for improvement for the next competition would be to have a few more judges to get a wider spectrum of opinions, otherwise GREAT JOB!
